Commissioner Walter B. “Duke” Duke, III
Thank you for your interest in Dania Beach, Broward County’s first city. Dania Beach is truly a small town nestled between two major cities adjacent to an international airport and also major seaport. We enjoy a small town charm but are only minutes away from professional sports, world-class night life and metropolitan arts and culture. We can travel by plane or boat and be nearly anywhere in the world without much trouble. We are bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and a major gaming venue, the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, to the west. Those of us who work in Fort Lauderdale or Miami find Dania Beach a convenient place to live.

Like many, I have always loved our award winning beach. It is quiet and passive and has never been commercially developed except for the FAU SeaTech scientific research center. We have a world-renowned fishing pier favored by local anglers, amazing backwater kayak trails, the Dania Beach Bar & Grill, a very rustic little restaurant, and our brand new 120-slip municipal marina. The new Quarterdeck Restaurant on the Dania Beach Pier has been an amazing success. Other than our residents, our beach is our most treasured natural asset. We are currently in the midst of our Waterfront Revitalization Plan to clean up and improve our public beach. We have upgraded our pier and pier restaurant, entirely rebuilt our marina and more upgrades are planned.   Upon completion, I feel that we will have one of the most spectacular public beaches in Florida.  Join nearly 25,000 monthly viewers by navigating to http://daniabeachfl.gov/piercam to view our heralded Pier Cam

In addition to a huge benefit to our local economy, our local marine industry provides our residents and visitors with many unique opportunities to enjoy marine life and recreational boating. We have numerous boat yards and marinas, back water kayak trails, superb fishing, marine retail stores, and boat dealers. Our local high school, South Broward High School is a marine magnet school and thus providing our local kids with the opportunity to be exposed to many careers in the marine industries and sciences. Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Ecosystems Research, the world’s largest coral reef research center is located right here in John Lloyd State Park in Dania Beach. We are home to the International Fishing Hall of Fame, American Maritime Officers National Union Headquarters and the United States Navy.  I have made it a priority to support and promote this amazing aspect of our great little city and will continue to do so .

Dania Beach is also bubbling with cultural creativity. Our charming seaside town is home to artists, designers, poets, photographers, filmmakers, musicians, inventors, scientists and decorators, who live, work and play in Dania Beach.  The Dania Beach Arts Council is helping to organize all of the creative juices that make our city great.  The Council will help with the economic development of these disciplines in our city that will provide both tangible (jobs) and intangible (beauty/creativity) benefits to our great little city.  Please make plans to visit our community garden known as the PATCH where we grow our own fruits and vegetables with local labor and volunteers.

Economic activity also abounds in Dania Beach.   Dania Jai Alai and Casino is also undergoing a reported $80 million renovation that will be spectacular upon completion bringing this facility back to its original splendor.  Dania Live, a planned 1.5-million square foot visitor centric life style center is also expected to break ground in 2015 on the old roller coaster site along Interstate 95.  This project will include national retailers,  restaurants,  hotel and luxury multi-family housing.   There are also a number of contemporary bulk industrial projects in various stages of construction and lease up west of the airport to address the growth of Port Everglades.   The recent expansion by the Fort Lauderdale Airport has given way to the construction of a number of new hotels in Dania Beach as visitors seek locations near the airport and beaches.

It is easy to see why most folks in Broward feel that Dania Beach has more potential than any city in Broward and under the right leadership can be one of the best cities of its size in America. It has all of the positive attributes of a bustling metropolitan area but still maintains a small town charm and sensibility we have come to adore. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can ever be of any assistance.

Our city commission meetings are the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. I invite you to join us.  The meetings can be viewed live on Comcast Channel 78 and also on the web at DaniaBeachFL.gov.
